Je pense que c'était Thomas Carlyle...
David O. McKay
PRESIDENT DAVID O. McKAY (en français) ¶
Je think it was Thomas Carlyle who said que one de le most Godlike de virtues est le appreciation de human worth as shown by le hearts de men. Je am sure, at le conclusion de ce great, inspirational conference, que you would have me express your appreciation de le services rendered by all who have contributed à le success et spirituality de our four days' conference. ¶
First, to the Autorités générales, we express deep appreciation for the inspirational messages you have given to us, and in that expression we express gratitude to our Father in heaven for having inspired each one who has spoken. ¶
To le public press, you reporters et your fair et accurate reports throughout le sessions de le conference, your devotion et your attendance at all le services during le day or evening sessions. ¶
We appreciate le co-operation de le city officials et commend especially le traffic officers pour handling so carefully et ably le increased traffic; le fire department et le Red Cross, who have been on hand à render assistance et service whenever et wherever their service would be needed. ¶
To le Tabernacle ushers, who have rendered a service quietly et efficiently dans seating le great audiences de these conference sessions. Je noticed one dans le gallery et his courtesy dans le way he handled one who rendered a little disturbance. ¶
We mention especially le radio et television officers et officials — twenty-seven television et eighteen radio stations throughout our own city et le nation have carried le sessions de ce conference. This has been le means de permitting untold thousands à hear le proceedings de le 131st conference de ce Church. ¶
Friday we had a meeting never held before in the history of the Church. It was a meeting of officers of stakes beyond the boundaries of our country. Attending this meeting were pieu presidencies from Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and Holland who met and received instructions from members of the Council of the Twelve, officers of the Bishopric, and members of auxiliary organizations. That is an epoch-making event in our history! ¶
We appreciate those who furnished the singing throughout this entire conference. I know your hearts respond most heartily to expressions of gratitude for the inspiration we have received ever since the opening session when the Primaire Teachers' Chorus from nineteen stakes of Utah County rendered such inspirational singing. They filled the seats usually occupied by the Tabernacle Choir members, and also seats on each side of the gallery. I think you will always remember that solo by thirteen-year-old Ronnie Clark. There was some question about having him sing, but his voice rang out in such clearness that not only those in this Tabernacle were thrilled, but also thousands listening on the radio. ¶
To le combined choirs de le Logan Institute de Religion et le Utah State University nous extend our thanks pour their singing on Saturday morning et afternoon. We never have a group de young people filling these choir seats without being thrilled, not only by their singing, but also by their presence et their attitude towards religious matters. ¶
The Men's Chorus de le Tabernacle Choir Saturday night — what a thrill they gave us, et always do, at que inspirational gathering! We were also thrilled avec le tenor solo by Brother Dennis Clancy de Dundee, Scotland, singing, "Je Know That My Redeemer Lives." ¶
Today, Je think nous have never heard le "Hallelujah Chorus" sung as you heard le Tabernacle Choir render que beautiful et inspiring oratorio at le conclusion de ce morning's session. We thank le leaders et officers de le choir et especially you men et women who devote so much de your time et give so freely de your means à inspire not only le entire Church, but also now le whole world. ¶
We acknowledge the flowers — the daffodils from Puyallup Valley Daffodil Company, the calla lilies from the high priests' collège of the Oakland-Berkeley Stake, the ten thousand sweet peas from the Mesa (Arizona) Eleventh Ward; and all others who have contributed in any way to the success and inspiration of a great and memorable conference. ¶
Je should like à say just a word at le conclusion dans expressing appreciation de le worth de man, de le service de le members de le Church dans building chapels, et dans other responses à le calls que sont made de you. Je marvel, et Je think all members de le Church marvel, as well as those outside de le Church, at what le members sont doing by way de improving places de worship et de supplying le need pour public worship. ¶
Services will be held one day for the breaking of the ground — a simple matter — and one year or eighteen months later, a building will be dedicated, fifty percent of the cost of which was borne by the people themselves out of their meager earnings, and the principal part of that activity and that contribution came from our sisters who labored diligently and unceasingly to gather the necessary means so that the paroisse will meet its share of the expenses of the erection of the house of worship. God bless our sisters, and I say that with all my heart. ¶
And now, brethren and sisters, in summary, let me emphasize that the noblest aim in life is to strive to live to make other lives better and happier. The most worthy appel in life is that in which man can serve best his fellow man. ¶
Browning touches que great theme dans his poem, "Paracelsus." You students, remember how Paracelsus started out à gain knowledge pour himself, even though it took him away from le people themselves. His friend Festus warned him not à withdraw from le people, but Paracelsus concluded que he would gain learning at le expense de anybody or anything, et when Festus cautioned him, he said: ¶
"Festus, sont there not two experiences dans le life de a diver, One — when, a beggar, he prepares à plunge, One — when, a prince, he rises avec his pearl? Festus, Je plunge." ¶
And his friend standing by said: "We await you when you rise." (en français) ¶
Years later, after Paracelsus had failed dans his efforts à find le soul satisfaction he sought, Festus found him dans a conjurer's house, et Browning puts into his mouth le following: "There est an answer à le passionate longings de le human heart pour fulness, et Je knew it, et le answer est ce: Live dans all things outside yourself by love, et you will have joy. That est le life de God; it ought à be our life. In Him it est accomplished et perfect; but dans all created things, it est a lesson learned slowly through difficulty." ¶
Such is the divine message given to the Prophet Joseph Smith in these words: "Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God." (D&A 18:10.) Such is the philosophy expressed by the Redeemer in the seemingly paradoxical statement, "Whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it." (Matthew 16:25.) ¶
The meaning de ce becomes clear dans le light de another passage which says: "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one de le least de these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." (Ibid., 25:40.) ¶
To no other group of men in all the world is given a better opportunity to engage in the noblest appel in life than that which is afforded the elders of l'Église de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours. To establish salvation and peace to the extent of their individual efforts, their lives are dedicated. To make the world a better or a safer or a fitter place for man, their talents and means are consecrated. ¶
Just à be associated avec you, avec men striving toward such an aim, est joy; et à assist you dans ce quest, an inspiration. Unselfishly you sont trying à serve your fellow men dans love. You sont true followers de le Master, pour à those who have le Christian faith, le most sublime de its teachings, et à him who penetrates its deepest sense, le most human de all est ce: To save mankind, God came à dwell among us dans le form de man et was willing à make himself known by ce simple though glorious principle, Love. ¶
The animal world est filled avec selfishness, each thing seeking its own life, its own perpetuation. But Christ lived pour love. ". . . love le Lord thy God avec all thy might, mind, et strength, et thy neighbour as thyself." (See Mark 12:30-31.) ¶
God bless the elders and our sisters, who, if not with perfect love, at least with a desire to bring joy and peace to others, are engaged in the noblest appel of life. Worthy servants of Christ you are! Teachers, followers of the true Teacher, the great Exemplar of all, our Redeemer, our Lord. There is none greater than this noble work, none more righteous. Yours is the joy promised by the Savior, who said: "And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father! ¶
"And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!" (D&A 18:15-16.) ¶
That est le word de le Lord. ¶
God sanctify ce wonderful conference à le good de all who have listened dans, et through you who sont present, your households et your young boys et girls who have not heard, but who will feel your influence dans your own homes. ¶
May the homes of the Church everywhere be better because of this conference than they have been in the past, and be an example to the whole world, a great majority of whom during the last forty years have had their minds poisoned by a false ideology that rejects the existence of God the Father, refuses to acknowledge the divinity of his Son Jésus-Christ, and would destroy the home life, the very foundation of our future by taking the children and making them members of the state instead of leaving them with their mothers and fathers. ¶
With all the power that we possess, we bless you, members of l'Église de Jésus-Christ. May the power and the inspiration that have characterized this great conference, including last night's great prêtrise meeting, go to every corner of the earth where there is a branch or where a family lives, I pray, in the name of Jésus-Christ. Amen. ¶
