Don C. Driggs · 1918 October General Conference · 1918-10-06
Transcribed from the OCR of the official printed Conference Report published by the Deseret News and hosted at the Internet Archive (conferencereport1918sa). Running heads, page numbers, and line-break hyphenation removed.
No witness list recorded beyond the primary source.
Newly ingested talk, previously missing from the vault entirely. Elder Driggs's full address opens the Second Outdoor Meeting (Bureau of Information building, 2 p.m., Sunday Oct. 6, 1918, Elder David O. McKay presiding), immediately after the meeting's opening housekeeping (choir/music credits, opening prayer); had been wrongly spliced onto the tail of 1918-10-31-joseph-e-robinson-remarks.md, after that meeting's own closing choir/benediction, with no boundary marker (only the parenthetical calling line survived, byline dropped); removed from that file, without being preserved elsewhere, in commit b017053f87 (final-review: 1918-10 joseph-e-robinson-31). Recovered from the '-' lines of that commit, then independently re-verified against a fresh djvu XML reading-order reconstruction of conferencereport892chur_djvu.xml (the file actually served under the conferencereport1918sa identifier) via scripts/ingest/cr-reading-order.py, and against the Internet Archive BookReader page image for leaf n127 (printed page 126), which confirmed the one substantive OCR fix needed: 'hgnung' -> 'fighting' ('it is really the cause that we have been fighting for ourselves these many years'). Other routine fixes: 'Lord bless' duplicate hyphen artifacts, '1 want' -> 'I want', '8 o'clock-' -> '8 o'clock' (line-break hyphen). The closing line 'in the name Jesus. Amen.' (missing 'of' before 'Jesus') was confirmed to read that way on the printed page itself (leaf n127) rather than being an OCR slip, so it is preserved verbatim rather than silently corrected. Talk begins immediately after 'The Glee Club sang: "Scatter Sunshine."' on leaf n126/printed p.125 and ends 'in the name Jesus. Amen.' on leaf n127/printed p.126, immediately before 'ELDER JOHN M. BAXTER.' (1918-10-32-john-m-baxter-remarks.md) begins. The session-opening housekeeping (meeting particulars, choir, prayer) that precedes Driggs's own byline is administrative content, not part of this discourse per docs/ingestion.md, and so is not included in the body here. Session/date corrected to Second Outdoor Meeting / 1918-10-06 to match the corrected metadata established for the host talk (31) and its neighbors, and for talk 33 (1918-10-33-edward-w-croft-remarks.md, corrected in the same final-review pass) which is also part of this same meeting. talk_order 31.5 / id suffix 31b follow the vault's established convention for inserting a discovered talk between two already-numbered talks without renumbering the rest of the conference (compare 1918-10-29b-anthony-w-ivins-remarks-29b.md, ingested in this same pass). Status: draft, ready for the normal Final Review pipeline.
Ingested; not yet independently reviewed.
