Joseph Reece · 1918 October General Conference · 1918-10-06
Transcribed from the OCR of the official printed Conference Report published by the Deseret News and hosted at the Internet Archive (conferencereport1918sa). Running heads, page numbers, and line-break hyphenation removed.
No witness list recorded beyond the primary source.
Newly ingested talk, previously missing from the vault entirely and with no existing speaker-authority entry (added to schema/speakers-authority.yaml in this same pass; no independent biographical adjudication asserted beyond this single appearance). Elder Reece's full address, given at the Second Overflow Meeting (Assembly Hall, Sunday afternoon, Oct. 6, 1918) immediately after William H. Mendenhall's talk, had been wrongly spliced onto the tail of 1918-10-30-william-h-mendenhall-remarks.md with no boundary marker (only the parenthetical calling line survived, byline dropped); removed from that file, without being preserved elsewhere, in commit f563c3a2ec (final-review: 1918-10 william-h-mendenhall-30), which also removed a second, separate talk (John M. Henrie's, ingested separately as 1918-10-30c-john-m-henrie-remarks-30c.md). Recovered from the '-' lines of that commit, then independently re-verified against a fresh djvu XML reading-order reconstruction of conferencereport892chur_djvu.xml (the file actually served under the conferencereport1918sa identifier) via scripts/ingest/cr-reading-order.py, and against Internet Archive BookReader page images for leaves n114-n117 (printed pages 113-116) — this leaf range has heavier OCR degradation than the surrounding pages and several passages required direct image collation: 'Talipes' -> 'James' and 'Wt as the Presidency' -> 'left as the Presidency' (leaf n115/printed p.114, confirmed against image), and the badly garbled closing paragraphs on leaf n116/printed p.115 ('th?"c all the children ... •*n h°aven', 'Yon and T would have faltered Irnp- since', 'this I'"nw1e/Vp', etc.) resolved via direct image reading to 'that all the children ... in heaven', 'You and I would have faltered long since', 'this knowledge', and 'through the obedience of his people to the things he has revealed for their guidance' (raw OCR read 'abidance', but the image clearly shows 'guidance'). Byline confirmed spelled 'ELDER JOSEPH REECE' on the printed page image (leaf n114), matching the task's naming. Speaker's calling line ('President of the Nebo Stake of Zion') taken directly from the printed text; calling_source: chronology not set (research/chronology/chronology.yaml is scoped to General Authorities, not local stake presidents, so no automated backfill was available). Talk begins immediately after Mendenhall's 'This is my prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.' on leaf n114/printed p.113 and ends with 'I humbly pray, in the name of Jesus. Amen.' on leaf n117/printed p.116, immediately before John M. Henrie's talk (30c) begins on the same leaf. Session/date corrected to Second Overflow Meeting / 1918-10-06 to match the corrected metadata established for the host talk (30) and its neighbors in this same final-review pass. talk_order 30.5 / id suffix 30b follow the vault's established convention for inserting a discovered talk between two already-numbered talks without renumbering the rest of the conference (compare 1918-10-29b-anthony-w-ivins-remarks-29b.md, ingested in this same pass; 1918-10-24b-stephen-l-richards-remarks-24b.md). Status: draft, ready for the normal Final Review pipeline.
Ingested; not yet independently reviewed.
