Heavyweight pass fixed a major misattribution and an arbitrary split: this single continuous talk by Charles W. Penrose (First Day Afternoon Session, opening the session) had been divided into two files under two wrong bylines — the first half (this file, formerly id 1913-10-04-walter-p-monson-remarks-4) was misattributed to Walter P. Monson (who only pronounced the prior benediction and did not speak here), and the second half (formerly a separate file with a garbled OCR-mojibake id/title/speaker, 1913-10-05-brother-who-as-he-declared...) has been merged into this file. Restored as one talk under the "PRESIDENT CHARLES W. PENROSE." running heads that appear throughout (pp. 15, 17, 19, 21, 23), removed the printed synopsis line/dashes, removed running heads and page numbers, de-hyphenated, reflowed paragraphs, fixed OCR errors ("beendiction"->"benediction", "arid"->"and", "opporunity"->"opportunity").
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: verified against archive.org/details/conferencereport1913sa leaves 16-25 (page/n15 through page/n24), page-by-page collation against the scan/OCR witness. Confirmed this is a single continuous talk: it opens the First Day Afternoon Session immediately after the opening hymn ("The Spirit of God like a fire is burning") and prayer (Elder Andrew Kimball), under the "PREST. CHARLES W. PENROSE." byline and synopsis block, and its running head ("PRESIDENT CHARLES W. PENROSE.") recurs on every page through its close ("...through Jesus Christ. Amen."), immediately followed by the closing hymn sung by Sister Amelia Margetts and then Elder Brigham H. Roberts's talk (see 1913-10-06), whose own opening line explicitly references "the great truths that President Penrose has presented to us this afternoon," confirming both the speaker identity and the boundary. Corrected id/speaker/speaker_id/title from the two previous wrongly attributed files (Walter P. Monson; and an OCR-garbled mojibake id/title/speaker). Renumbering not required: this merge keeps talk_order 4 and the file previously at 1913-10-05 is removed, consistent with this batch's existing pattern of non-consecutive talk_order numbers for merged/removed material.
This is a living critical edition. If you find a transcription, metadata, or sourcing error in this talk, report it to the editors →Reports are collated against the page scan and land as corrections in the vault.
