Heavyweight pass corrected a boundary error: the previous draft split this single continuous Opening Address (pages 1-9 of the print) into two files, with the Word of Wisdom / tobacco / dress-fashion portion (originally pages 4-9) misfiled under a separate id and mislabeled as George Q. Cannon (who died in 1901 and could not have spoken in 1913). Restored as one talk, matching the "PRESIDENT JOSEPH F. SMITH." running heads that appear on every page of this span (pp. 3, 5, 7, 9) and the first-person voice throughout. Removed running heads/page numbers, de-hyphenated, reflowed paragraphs, fixed OCR letter-substitution errors (e.g. "onlv"->"only", "prav"->"pray", "jaise"->"raise", "chis"->"this", "T"->"I").
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: verified against archive.org/details/conferencereport1913sa leaves 1-9 (page/n1), collated word-for-word against the page scans (viewed directly as images, not just OCR) for pp. 3-9. Found and fixed a genuine boundary bug from the prior ingest: pp. 1-9 are one continuous Joseph F. Smith Opening Address, but the ingest had split it into two files at p. 4, where the original 1913 Deseret News print itself contains a byline error -- the bottom of p. 4 reads "President George Q. Cannon" mid-sentence, which is impossible (Cannon died May 1901) and contradicts the "PRESIDENT JOSEPH F. SMITH." running head on every surrounding page (pp. 3, 5, 7, 9) and the unbroken first-person voice. Treated the printed "Cannon" line as a production/typesetting artifact, not a real speaker change, and merged the two files back into one talk. The true next speaker, Anthon H. Lund, begins after this talk's closing "Amen" (p. 9) under his own running head "PRESIDENT ANTHON H. LUND." and has been split out to 1913-10-02-anthon-h-lund-remarks-2.md, which had been fully absorbed into the old George Q. Cannon file and was previously missing as its own talk. One short passage (the sentence spanning the p.4/p.5 break, "...I ever did smell. [gap] often said to me...") is missing its subject in the original 1913 print itself -- left as printed rather than inventing a joining word; noted here rather than in the body.
This is a living critical edition. If you find a transcription, metadata, or sourcing error in this talk, report it to the editors →Reports are collated against the page scan and land as corrections in the vault.
