Joseph F. Smith · 1912 April General Conference · 1912-04-05
Transcribed from the OCR of the official printed Conference Report (82nd Annual Conference), published by the Deseret News and hosted at the Internet Archive as conferencereport1912a (internal scan file conferencereport821chur). Running heads, page numbers, printed synopsis, and line-break hyphenation removed; paragraphs reflowed.
No witness list recorded beyond the primary source.
Proofread against the source text.
Full re-ingest from the correct source. The previous draft was sourced entirely from the wrong Internet Archive item (conferencereport82chur, the October 1911 semi-annual conference) and its body text was unrelated to this address; replaced in full.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: verified against archive.org/details/conferencereport1912a (internal scan conferencereport821chur), leaves 1-11 (page/n1, running head 'PRESIDENT JOSEPH F. SMITH.'). Fixed a bug in scripts/ingest/cr-reading-order.py's column-gutter detection (page_gutter): near-full-width running-head/page-number lines were bridging the true gutter position in the merged-interval computation, and the old fixed x-scan range (540-1140) couldn't find gutters outside that band; this volume's synopsis column runs unusually wide, pushing the true gutter past 1140 on many pages, which is what the prior session misdiagnosed as an unrecoverable 'linearized' DjVu text layer for this conference. Excluding header-like lines and taking the widest gap in the remaining x-interval projection recovers the correct column order throughout. Confirmed boundaries: this is the First Day (Friday, April 5, 1912) Opening Address, beginning immediately after the conference convened, the roster of authorities present, and the opening hymn ('Come, come, ye Saints') and prayer (Elder Moses W. Taylor), with 'I feel very grateful for the privilege I enjoy of meeting with you here at the opening session of this, the eighty-second anniversary...'; ends '...for the discomfiture of His enemies; which may God grant, is my prayer, in the name of Jesus. Amen.', followed by the hymn 'Oh, my Father' (Spanish, sung by Sister Amelia Margetts) and then President Anthon H. Lund's address. De-hyphenated, reflowed, and corrected scattered OCR errors (e.g. 'enitled' to 'entitled', 'pemitted' to 'permitted', 'exsit' to 'exist'). Removed the printed synopsis block per docs/review.md.
