William H. Smart · 1908 April General Conference · 1908-04-05
Heavyweight page-by-page collation against the Internet Archive scan/OCR of the official printed Conference Report of the Seventy-Eighth Annual Conference (April 1908), hosted at conferencereport1908a. Running heads and page numbers removed (including a mid-paragraph running-head interruption where the OCR text split the word "people" across a page break and misread it as "peopie"), line-break hyphenation dejoined, paragraphing confirmed, and OCR letter/spacing errors corrected against the witness. Grade reflects the officially published Conference Report.
No witness list recorded beyond the primary source.
Proofread against the source text.
Proofread against the Internet Archive Conference Report scan/OCR witness; boundary, metadata, and OCR cleanup checked.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: authoritative IA Conference Report source verified (conferencereport1908a, page/n54, matching the printed-page-53-to-leaf-n54 offset confirmed against sibling anchored 1908a files); page-by-page collation against the scan/OCR witness confirmed talk boundary (immediately follows Franklin S. Bramwell, immediately precedes Heber J. Grant's Word of Wisdom address; a running head reading "ELDER HEBER J. GRANT." appears mid-paragraph near the printed page 54/55 break but is a page header, not the true talk boundary, which comes later after Smart's closing hymn quotation and "Amen"). Corrected OCR misreads verbatim against the witness: 'soread' -> 'spread', 'B^nnion' -> 'Bennion' (Samuel R. Bennion, Uintah Stake counselor), 'inight' -> 'might', 'auxilary' -> 'auxiliary', 'peopie' -> 'people' (word split across the running-head page break and misread), 'respecft' -> 'respect', and two dropped-space fixes ('believe,it' -> 'believe, it', 'tea, coffee' -> 'tea, coffee') where the witness itself shows no space. Left as printed/ambiguous: "one' occasion" (stray apostrophe in the witness, unclear if OCR or print error), "authorites" (witness itself spells it this way across the hyphen break, not clearly an OCR misread of "authorities"), and "the plow, share" (witness shows a clear comma; possibly a garbled "plowshare" but left as printed per restraint).
This is a living critical edition. If you find a transcription, metadata, or sourcing error in this talk, report it to the editors →Reports are collated against the page scan and land as corrections in the vault.
