Objects of the Law of Tithing

Joseph F. Smith · 1899 October General Conference · 1899-10-07

Fidelity

◕Authoritative print

Transcribed from the OCR of the official printed Conference Report of the Seventieth Semi-Annual Conference (October 1899), scanned and hosted at the Internet Archive (conferencereport1899sa). Heavyweight pass collated the full talk against the IA djvu XML reading-order reconstruction (scripts/ingest/cr-reading-order.py) to resolve a two-column OCR interleaving defect.

Collation history

Proofread against the source text.

Light review: in-context proofread, synopsis/session-artifact cleanup, and spacing fixes. NOT a full page-by-page scan collation.

Collated word-by-word against the original scan.

Heavyweight pass: this file's body opened with a duplicate of the preceding speaker's (Francis M. Lyman) closing paragraphs, wrongly copied from 1899-10-lyman-nature-of-tithing.md; removed it. Retitled from the supplied 'Testimony of the Truth' to the printed subject list's primary theme, 'Objects of the Law of Tithing' (title_supplied: false; the full printed list is 'Objects of the Law of Tithing -- The same Law in Ancient Times -- Duty of the Leaders of the Church in Relation to it -- Disastrous Effects of Neglect and Beneficent Results of Obedience', removed as a leaked fragment per convention). This is a long, heavily scripture-quotation-based tithing sermon; a plain flattened-OCR pass produced a garbled, apparently-truncated ending at the Second/Third Day session boundary due to two-column interleaving, so the full body was re-collated against the IA djvu XML using the reading-order reconstruction script (scripts/ingest/cr-reading-order.py) rather than the flattened djvu.txt, confirming the talk's true, complete extent through the genuine 'Amen' and resolving numerous OCR errors along the way (theyshall->they shall, possesed->possessed, whicn->which, row->now, Oe cut->be cut, devou'f foi->devourer for, shail->shall, nation-?->nations, cc build->to build, iny/oa/thMr/th^ir->any/on/their/their, t ook->book, weil->well, f iund unon->found upon, no1: he->not be, and about a dozen more). Confirmed date/session/talk_order correct. 0 QC ERRORs.
