Franklin D. Richards · 1898 October General Conference · 1898-10-07
Transcribed from the OCR of the official printed Conference Report of the Sixty-ninth Semi-Annual Conference (October 1898), scanned and hosted at the Internet Archive (conferencereport1898sa). OCR was cleaned and corrected: running heads, page numbers, and line-break hyphenation removed; obvious OCR errors fixed. Not yet proofread page-by-page against the scan images, so minor residual OCR errors may remain (status: draft, pending review).
No witness list recorded beyond the primary source.
Proofread against the source text.
Proofread against the official/CHL/JSP source plus scan/OCR witness; removed a wrongly-prepended fragment and session/music material that belonged to the preceding Smith talk and session transition (see heavyweight_review_notes), and fixed dense OCR typos throughout.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: source URL verified (archive.org conferencereport1898sa, IA djvu OCR, pages ~27-33, subhead 'Self-support—President Woodruff's last addresses—Organizing the First Presidency...'). This file previously opened with a fragment that is actually the true ending of Joseph F. Smith's preceding Second Day Morning talk (wrongly attached because a page-break running head was misread as this speaker's name, with no topic subhead following -- the tell for page noise rather than a genuine new discourse), plus the intervening choir/hymn/prayer/benediction material marking the session transition to Second Day Afternoon (session_music_bleed). Removed both; this file now begins at Richards's real discourse start. See companion note on 1898-10-smith-temporal-and-spiritual-welfare.md, which now carries its true ending. Also removed a stray running-head artifact mid-body ('PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D—* RICHARDS') and fixed a large number of OCR typos throughout (comtemplating->contemplating, Aaroruc->Aaronic, and many more). The body content itself (First Presidency succession history, self-support counsel, testimony on wars as a latter-day necessity) verified present and undisturbed in the OCR from the real subhead through 'Amen'. No missing text found. Boundaries confirmed against Smith (precedes, after session transition) and Grant (follows, 'ELDER HEBER J. GRANT' with new subhead).
