Minutes of the October 1878 General Conference

Conference record · 1878 October General Conference · 1878-10-06

Fidelity

○Fragmentary

Deseret News minutes of the October 6-8, 1878 General Conference (Forty-Eighth Semi-Annual Conference). President John Taylor presiding. The Weebly page's own bibliography for this conference lists only 2 JD citations, and both are misplaced from adjacent conferences, not genuinely from this one: George Q. Cannon's 'Labors and Experience of the Elders...' is dated April 6, 1878 (already filed as [[1878-04-cannon-labors-and-experience-of-the-eldersthe]]) and John Taylor's 'All Temporal Concerns...' is dated April 9, 1879 (belongs to the following year's spring conference) — an apparent site-compilation error, not evidence that this October 1878 conference has unfiled JD discourses. No speaker at this conference (Hyde, Rich, Cannon, Pratt, Joseph F. Smith, Taylor, Lorenzo Snow, Brigham Young Jr., Richards, Woodruff) has a genuine JD citation for an October 1878 remark; all are summary-only in the Deseret News, which is why zero talk files exist for this conference — not a vault gap. Notable financial reports: Logan Temple donations $90,020.76; Manti Temple contributions $90,114.11.

Collation history

Proofread against the source text.

Proofread against the official/CHL/JSP source plus scan/OCR witness; corrected a misleading 'NOT yet individually transcribed' framing to accurately reflect that no genuine October 1878 discourse has a JD citation at all.

Collated word-by-word against the original scan.

Heavyweight pass: investigated why this conference (unlike almost every other in this era) has zero filed talks. The Weebly page's own bibliography lists exactly 2 JD citations, but both are misplaced from adjacent conferences: Cannon's discourse is dated April 6, 1878 (already correctly filed under the April 1878 conference) and Taylor's is dated April 9, 1879 (belongs to the next spring conference) — an apparent site-compilation bug on the Weebly page for this specific year, not evidence of an unfiled discourse. Confirmed no other speaker at this conference has any JD citation per the same bibliography. This conference is therefore correctly represented by zero talk files; the prior 'NOT yet individually transcribed' wording implied pending transcription work that does not actually exist, which has been corrected. Confirmed fidelity: fragmentary remains correct per schema/schema.md for record_type: conference_record.
