◑Contemporaneous report

Published in Journal of Discourses, Volume 19, pp. 334-340, under the single printed heading 'REMARKS. Made at a Meeting held in Nephi, on Wednesday Evening, May 15, 1878. (Reported by Geo. F. Gibbs.)' This one printed entry actually contains three separate speakers' remarks in sequence -- Bishop L. W. Hardy (on Tithing), Elder Erastus Snow (continuing the Tithing subject), and President John Taylor (general remarks) -- each introduced in the print by its own small-caps name line, not by a full 'Discourse by...' byline. speaker/speaker_id/calling_at_time above record only the first (and shortest) of the three named speakers, matching this catalog entry's packet-supplied speaker_candidate; see `speakers` above and final_review_notes below for how the multi-speaker attribution is now handled. calling_at_time follows Leonard W. Hardy's well-documented calling as First Counselor to Presiding Bishop Edward Hunter, which he held continuously from 1874 until Hunter's death in 1883 (the print's own byline gives only 'Bishop').

Witnesses

Reported by Geo. F. Gibbs; none of the three speakers reviewed this text before publication. BYU ContentDM's item-detail page currently fails to render in modern browsers (loads, then a client-side script redirects to the generic lib.byu.edu collections page; reproduced 2026-08-05, site-wide BYU bug, not link-format specific). Re-promote to preferred/source_url once BYU fixes this.

Page-anchored scan witness for Journal of Discourses volume 19, page 334. Currently the only reliably clickable link for this talk; BYU ContentDM is the institutionally preferred citation but its item pages are currently broken client-side (see the BYU witness note).
