Conference record · 1870 April General Conference · 1870-04-06
Deseret News minutes of the Fortieth Annual Conference. Unique scheduling: conference convened April 6, 1870, but immediately adjourned until May 5-8 due to absent leadership and unfinished gallery work in the New Tabernacle. All 9 discourses with surviving JD full text from the four main May 5-8 conference days are filed separately as talks: George A. Smith's 'Organization of the Church...,' Daniel H. Wells' 'The Gospel—Building Up the Kingdom,' and Brigham Young's 'Proper Conduct in Meeting' (all Thursday May 5 AM, JD 13); Orson Hyde's 'Punctual Payment of Debts' and Orson Pratt's 'The Latter-Day Work...' (Thursday May 5 PM, JD 13); John Taylor's 'How to Know the Things of God' (Friday May 6 AM, JD 13); Brigham Young's 'The Fashions of the World...,' Wilford Woodruff's 'The Work of God...,' and George A. Smith's 'Home Manufactures...' (Friday May 6 PM, JD 13/14); and Brigham Young's 'Character and Condition of the Latter-Day Saints...' (Sunday May 8 PM, JD 14) — confirmed against the Weebly page's own bibliography, which lists no other JD citations for this conference (Pratt's April 6 remarks are separately cited only to the Deseret News, not JD). The many other named speakers (Wells' April 6 remarks, Taylor's April 6 remarks, Woodruff's and Cannon's April 6 remarks, and the numerous May 7-8 speakers: Cannon, Erastus Snow, Lorenzo Snow, Joseph Young Sr., Rich, Richards, Brigham Young Jr., Joseph F. Smith) are recorded only as third-person Deseret News summaries, with no full JD text located — consistent with the bibliography, not a vault gap.
Published minutes of the April/May 1870 General Conference.
Digital compilation of conference minutes and discourse references.
Proofread against the source text.
Proofread against the official/CHL/JSP source plus scan/OCR witness; fixed a major stale-claims bug (this file wrongly asserted all discourses were 'not yet individually transcribed' when 9 were already filed as separate talks) and rewrote the day-by-day summary accordingly.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: fixed a stale-claims bug — this file asserted that discourses by Pratt, Smith, Young, Taylor, Woodruff, and Cannon were 'NOT yet individually transcribed,' when 9 discourses already existed as separately filed talks (reviewed under claude-sonnet-4-6's earlier light pass, each already carrying a precise JD citation). Rewrote the day-by-day summary to name and cross-link all 9 filed discourses by session, correcting the previous version's vague, undated block-summary structure. Confirmed against the Weebly page's own bibliography that the April 6 opening-day speakers (Wells, Taylor, Pratt, Woodruff, Cannon, Wells again) and the numerous May 7-8 speakers (Cannon, Erastus Snow, Lorenzo Snow, Joseph Young Sr., Rich, Richards, Brigham Young Jr., Joseph F. Smith) have no JD citation — summary-only, not an ingestion gap; Pratt's April 6 remarks are separately cited only to the Deseret News. Confirmed fidelity: fragmentary remains correct per schema/schema.md for record_type: conference_record.
