Historical Address

George A. Smith · 1868 October General Conference · 1868-10-08

Fidelity

◑Contemporaneous report

Published in Journal of Discourses, Volume 13, pp. 103-124, as a single combined entry (confirmed against indexes/jod-page-index.json and the Weebly page's own bibliography, which lists only one JD citation dated October 8, 1868). The Weebly page's own agenda lists this as a two-part address — 'History of Church Part 1 from Kirtland to Nauvoo' Wednesday, October 7, 2 p.m., and 'History of Church Part 2 Emigration to Utah' Thursday, October 8, 10 a.m. — while the printed JD's own table of contents dates it 'Oct. 8, 9, 1868.' JD published the two parts as one continuous 22-page discourse; this file reproduces that combined JD text in full, verified against the IA scan (opening 'ing of no ordinary character. In all the Conferences...' through closing '...cease to fellowship every man that will not build up Zion. Amen.,' confirmed verbatim, ~2600 OCR lines, no truncation). Reported by David W. Evans in Pitman shorthand; the speaker did not review this text before publication. Text transcribed from the printed JD.

Witnesses

Pitman shorthand by David W. Evans; speaker did not review. BYU ContentDM's item-detail page currently fails to render in modern browsers (loads, then a client-side script redirects to the generic lib.byu.edu collections page; reproduced 2026-06-30, site-wide BYU bug, not link-format specific). Re-promote to preferred/source_url once BYU fixes this.

Page-anchored scan witness for Journal of Discourses volume 13, page 103. Currently the only reliably clickable link for this talk; BYU ContentDM is the institutionally preferred citation but its item pages are currently broken client-side (see the BYU witness note).

Collation history

Proofread against the source text.

Proofread against the official/CHL/JSP source plus scan/OCR witness; body confirmed word-for-word complete across its full 22-page span, no changes needed.

Collated word-by-word against the original scan.

Heavyweight pass: confirmed JD 13:103-124 citation against indexes/jod-page-index.json (unchanged, already correct). Body collated word-for-word against the IA OCR scan of JD Volume 13: opening and closing lines confirmed verbatim at the expected page boundaries, spanning the full ~2600-line/22-page combined address with no gap or truncation. Added session, documenting that the Weebly page's own agenda splits this into two delivery sessions (Wednesday PM 'Part 1: Kirtland to Nauvoo' and Thursday AM 'Part 2: Emigration to Utah') while JD published it as one continuous entry, which this file correctly reproduces in full.
