Brigham Young · · 1865-07-01
Published in Journal of Discourses, Volume 11, pp. 110-119, under the printed heading "Summary of Instructions." Header reads "Given by President Brigham Young to the people, on his visit to Utah, Juab, and Sanpete Counties, in June and July, 1865. Reported by G. D. Watt." This is a composite record: the printed entry itself states it compiles remarks from a multi-stop tour rather than a single dated discourse (the body names June 27 as the day before the twenty-first anniversary of Joseph Smith's death, and separately recounts an incident at Mount Pleasant and Manti in San Pete County). date/date_precision therefore record the range as approximate rather than a single exact delivery date; the printed volume/page range is the authority for scope.

Carruth CR 100 912 inventory item cr-100-912-0194. Scholarly re-transcription of George D. Watt's original Pitman shorthand report, catalogued at the Church History Library. Papers of George D. Watt MS 4534 box 4 disk 2 1865 images 191-193. See Journal of Discourses 11:110; sermon not in CR 100 317. Transcribed from George D. Watt's shorthand record by LaJean Purcell Carruth 10 December 2012. Carruth's footnote records that Watt produced a single summarized transcript for the whole June and July 1865 trip through Utah, Juab, and Sanpete Counties, so this item preserves the shorthand for one stop only within the composite printed entry, opening with the departure from Great Salt Lake City on the morning of 21 June 1865. Recorded as a separate witness per docs/ingestion.md's Carruth policy; the printed Journal of Discourses 11:110 text stays preferred until this transcription is reviewed against it.
Carruth CR 100 912 inventory item cr-100-912-0196. Scholarly re-transcription of George D. Watt's original Pitman shorthand report, catalogued at the Church History Library. Papers of George D. Watt MS 4534 box 4 disk 2 1865 images 202-203, the Salt Creek stop. Part of sermon in Journal of Discourses 11:112-113; not in CR 100 317. Transcribed by LaJean Purcell Carruth 1 June 2011. Coverage of the printed pages is partial by Carruth's own marking, and the shorthand uniquely preserves material the printed compilation omits, including Young's recollection of the land where the plates were taken, the old cooper shop at Seneca Falls, Hyrum's reluctance to believe, and the dedication of the meetinghouse at the close. Recorded as a separate witness per docs/ingestion.md's Carruth policy; the printed Journal of Discourses 11:112-113 text stays preferred until this transcription is reviewed against it.
Carruth CR 100 912 inventory item cr-100-912-0198. Scholarly re-transcription of George D. Watt's original Pitman shorthand report, catalogued at the Church History Library. Papers of George D. Watt MS 4534 box 4 disk 2 1865 images 209-212, the American Fork stop, dated in Watt's longhand June 26 1865. Part of sermon in Journal of Discourses 11:115; not in CR 100 317. Transcribed from George D. Watt's shorthand record by LaJean Purcell Carruth 13 January 2012. Carruth's footnote states that most of the shorthand content is not in the printed Journal of Discourses and that what was included has been extensively re-written, which makes this item a strong specimen for the eventual review-against-print pass; the circuit-preacher and black pony anecdote and the counsel on sleeping in fresh air survive only in the shorthand. Recorded as a separate witness per docs/ingestion.md's Carruth policy; the printed Journal of Discourses 11:115 text stays preferred until this transcription is reviewed against it.
