◑Contemporaneous report

Published in Journal of Discourses, Volume 9, pp. 266-271, delivered April 6, 1862, the Church's 32nd-anniversary conference (Sunday Morning Session, first item on the stand). Reported by G. D. Watt in Pitman shorthand; the speaker did not review this text before publication. BYU ContentDM's item-detail page for id/3646 currently fails to render in modern browsers (loads, then a client-side script redirects to the generic lib.byu.edu collections page; reproduced 2026-06-30, site-wide BYU bug, not link-format specific), so the page-anchored Internet Archive scan is recorded as source_url; re-promote BYU to preferred/source_url once that bug is fixed. Text below verified against the Internet Archive scan and the Historical General Conferences (Weebly) transcript, which independently confirms the same JD 9:266-271 citation. Full text reproduced; not abridged.

Witnesses

Pitman shorthand by G. D. Watt; speaker did not review. BYU ContentDM's item-detail page currently fails to render in modern browsers (loads, then a client-side script redirects to the generic lib.byu.edu collections page; reproduced 2026-06-30, site-wide BYU bug, not link-format specific). Re-promote to preferred/source_url once BYU fixes this.

Page-anchored scan witness for Journal of Discourses volume 9, page 266, confirmed against indexes/jod-page-index.json (byu_pointer 3646 -> ia page n275). Currently the only reliably clickable link for this talk; BYU ContentDM is the institutionally preferred citation but its item pages are currently broken client-side (see the BYU witness note).

Digital transcript of JD 9:266-271, consulted as a secondary check; matches the printed JD citation and confirms the Sunday morning session placement as the first discourse of the conference.

Collation history

Proofread against the source text.

Proofread against the official/CHL/JSP source plus scan/OCR witness; consolidated a duplicate-file pair (this discourse had been saved twice, differing only in quote encoding and metadata completeness), normalized curly quotes to straight quotes for corpus consistency, and merged the more precise IA/BYU page-anchored sourcing (JD 9:266-271) into this file while preserving its session/talk_order fields.

Collated word-by-word against the original scan.

Heavyweight pass: authoritative source URL verified via indexes/jod-page-index.json (byu_pointer 3646 -> JD 9:266, IA page n275); cross-checked against historicalgeneralconferences.weebly.com raw HTML, which independently confirms 'Young, Brigham. "Government of the Tongue--Impartiality in Judgment--Sealing." Journal of Discourses. Volume 9. April 6, 1862: pg. 266-271' and places it as the first discourse of the Sunday morning session, April 6, 1862. Body collated word-for-word against the Weebly transcript; no missing or bled-in material; boundaries clean (opens with the dateline, closes with 'May the Lord bless you. Amen.'). Resolved as the single surviving file for this discourse after finding it duplicated under two filenames; the duplicate (-judgmentsealing.md) is deleted in this same pass.
