Fidelity

○Fragmentary

Deseret News minutes of the April 6, 1858 General Conference (10 a.m. and 2 p.m. sessions). Orson Hyde's 'Divine Government—Hostility of the United States Government Towards the Saints' (JD 7:48-53) is filed separately with full text. Hyde's brief morning remarks, and brief stub summaries for Brigham Young (two), Daniel H. Wells, Lorenzo Snow, Heber C. Kimball, and Erastus Snow, are also filed separately (none published in JD; conference-minutes summaries only). Corrected during heavyweight review; a prior pass of this note did not cross-reference these stub files even though they already existed, and mis-cited Hyde's discourse as JD Volume 6. This was an extraordinary conference: the Utah War was ongoing, Johnston's Army was encamped at Fort Bridger, and Brigham Young was orchestrating the 'Move South' — the evacuation of northern Utah settlements. Much of the conference discussion concerned relocation logistics.

Collation history

Proofread against the source text.

Proofread against the Deseret News/weebly witnesses; fixed a JD citation error and added missing cross-references.

Collated word-by-word against the original scan.

Heavyweight pass: this conference-record file mis-cited Hyde's discourse as JD Volume 6 (corrected to JD 7:48-53, where the full text was also recovered — see that file's heavyweight_review_notes) and did not cross-reference the other 7 stub talk files even though they already existed. Corrected the fidelity_notes and body narrative. newspapers.lib.utah.edu returns HTTP 418 to automated fetch, a known tooling limitation, so the full Deseret News minutes text was not independently re-verified against the original scan this pass.
