Jedediah M. Grant · 1854 June General Conference · 1854-06-28
Published in Journal of Discourses, Volume 6, pp. 253-254, delivered June 28, 1854, at a special conference held to mark the tenth anniversary of the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith (June 27, 1844). Reporter unknown (the printed JD header for this discourse does not name one). Speaker did not review this text before publication. Full text reproduced; not abridged.
Full text of the discourse as published in the Journal of Discourses. BYU ContentDM's OCR text export for this item is heavily garbled (word-guess candidates interleaved inline); not used directly as a transcription source this pass.
Digital transcript used to source the text below; matches the JD 6:253-254 citation and is independently confirmed word-for-word against the IA scan's own OCR reading order, aside from a handful of OCR-only garbles in the scan that this transcript resolves correctly (e.g. 'Presidents Young and Kimball, and Elder Taylor' where the scan OCR drops 'Young and').
Page-anchored scan witness for Journal of Discourses volume 6, page 253. Independently reconstructed via DjVu XML word-coordinate reading order (scripts/ingest/cr-reading-order.py) and confirmed to match the Weebly transcript verbatim, modulo scan-only OCR corruption resolved by that cleaner transcript.
Proofread against the source text.
Proofread against the Weebly transcript and independently cross-checked against the IA scan's own DjVu XML word-coordinate reading order (both leaves 261-262, printed pp. 253-254); the two witnesses agree verbatim except where the scan OCR is corrupted.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: this discourse, along with the rest of the special conference, was entirely missing from the vault (open/unclaimed). Identified via web search that this conference (held June 27-28, 1854, to mark the tenth anniversary of the Carthage martyrdom) is documented in Deseret News, 'Conference Minutes,' July 6, 1854, and that only this one discourse (of the conference's roughly five recorded speakers) was ever republished in full in the Journal of Discourses (Volume 6, pp. 253-254) -- Brigham Young's, John Taylor's, Heber C. Kimball's, and Lorenzo Snow's remarks on June 27-28 are recorded only as brief third-person summaries in the conference minutes, with no surviving verbatim transcript; see 1854-06-conference-record-minutes.md for that session record. Fetched conferencereport1859_6's DjVu XML and reconstructed reading order (scripts/ingest/cr-reading-order.py, leaves 261-262) to independently verify the discourse boundaries and text against the Weebly transcript; both witnesses agree. Confirmed the closing sentence ('That is the man I want to bless me and the people of God.') is the genuine end of the discourse -- it does not close with 'Amen,' and the source's own next lines (Programme for the Fourth of July, chanting, benediction) are session housekeeping, correctly excluded from the body. Set date to the discourse's own dateline (June 28) and session to Second Day Morning per the conference minutes; talk begins the Second Day's General Priesthood-adjacent proceedings, following the missionary calls and Patriarch sustaining recorded earlier that same session.
