Minutes of the October 1853 General Conference

Conference record · 1853 October General Conference · 1853-10-06

Fidelity

○Fragmentary

Deseret News minutes of the October 6-9, 1853 General Conference. Orson Hyde's opening discourse, Franklin D. Richards' 'Advice to Immigrants,' Brigham Young's 'Gathering the Poor' discourse (all October 6), and George A. Smith's discourse on the Indian war (October 7, JD 1:191-197) are all filed separately as full talks (corrected during heavyweight review; a prior pass of this note incorrectly claimed Smith's discourse was not yet transcribed). Brigham Young's closing synopsis (Deseret News, November 14, 1853) is NOT yet transcribed into this vault, nor are the many shorter remarks by other elders across the conference. These remain open work for a future ingestion pass.

Collation history

Proofread against the source text.

Proofread against the Deseret News/Weebly witnesses; fixed a stale not-yet-transcribed claim (see heavyweight_review_notes).

Collated word-by-word against the original scan.

Heavyweight pass: this conference-record file claimed George A. Smith's 'Disobedience of Counsel' discourse was not yet transcribed, when it already exists as a separate talk file alongside the already-cross-referenced Hyde, Richards, and Young discourses — corrected the fidelity_notes and added the missing '(filed separately)' tag inline. Did not re-verify the sustaining-vote roster or full day-by-day narrative against the original Deseret News scan (newspapers.lib.utah.edu returns HTTP 418 to automated fetch, a known tooling limitation); those sections are unchanged from the prior pass.

Corrections

This is a living critical edition. If you find a transcription, metadata, or sourcing error in this talk, report it to the editors →Reports are collated against the page scan and land as corrections in the vault.
