Parley P. Pratt · 1853 April General Conference · 1853-04-07
Published in Journal of Discourses, Volume 1, pp. 6-15. No reporter credited on the printed page; the speaker did not review this text before publication. A separate, differently-sourced 'Spiritual Communication' discourse by the same speaker, delivered the day before (April 6, 1853) at the Salt Lake Temple northeast cornerstone ceremony and published in JD Volume 2, pp. 43-47, is filed separately at 1853-04-pratt-pp-spiritual-communication-ne-cornerstone; the two are not a continuation of each other.
Carruth CR 100 912 inventory item cr-100-912-0686. Scholarly re-transcription of George D. Watt's original Pitman shorthand report, catalogued at the Church History Library. MS 4534 box 1 folder 8 images 201-225. Sermon in Journal of Discourses 1:6; not in CR 100 317; also published in the Deseret News of 30 April 1853, and the CHL description notes that the published versions are very heavily edited. Transcribed by LaJean Purcell Carruth December 2009 and May 2020. The shorthand uniquely preserves an opening the printed text drops, in which Pratt asks the congregation for quiet and then reads aloud the remarks he had offered the previous day at the northeast corner stone, which is what fixes this as the Thursday afternoon Tabernacle discourse rather than the separate cornerstone address of 6 April. Recorded as a separate witness per docs/ingestion.md's Carruth policy; the printed Journal of Discourses 1:6 text stays preferred until this transcription is reviewed against it.
Ingested; not yet independently reviewed.
