Conference record · 1850 September General Conference · 1850-09-06
Transcribed from the Millennial Star, Vol. XIII, No. 2 (Jan. 15, 1851), pp. 17-24, which reprinted the minutes of the September 6-8, 1850 Great Salt Lake City General Conference (the first General Conference reported in the Millennial Star after the Saints' arrival in Utah). Deseret News (Sept. 14 and 21, 1850, pp. 108-113) is the preferred original source per schema.md, but its BYU ContentDM viewer is JavaScript-rendered and its OCR endpoints on chroniclingamerica.loc.gov / www.loc.gov returned a Cloudflare bot-challenge page to automated fetch in this environment, so it is recorded as a non-preferred witness pending future collation. The Millennial Star reprint is itself incomplete: its own editorial note states the remainder of the minutes were lost or mislaid in transit, so this file preserves only Friday morning through the early part of Sunday morning (cut off mid-sentence in President Young's tithing discourse). Graded fragmentary per schema.md's rule that conference_record entries are never verbatim.
OCR'd from MStar_Vol_13_djvu.txt (lines ~3091-3925). Cleaned of mechanical OCR character errors (line-break rejoining, obvious misreadings such as 'Carthage pan]' -> 'Carthage jail') without paraphrasing or modernizing wording. The reprint ends mid-sentence in President Young's tithing sermon, followed by an editorial note (itself OCR-damaged) stating the rest of the minutes, plus 'the Epistle,' were lost or mislaid and would run in a later number -- no continuation was found searching the remainder of Vol. XIII.
25-leaf manuscript recorded by Thomas Bullock. Confirmed as the preferred original per schema.md's 1844-1853 row in principle, but not made the preferred witness in this pass because most of it (the Sunday continuation beyond the Millennial Star cutoff) could not be transcribed with confidence via remote visual inspection. Used to spot-check and confirm the Millennial Star-sourced text and to resolve the Cahoon/Gaboon spelling. Recommended as the primary source for a future pass that completes this record.
Original newspaper printing of these minutes and the preferred source_url per schema.md's 1844-1853 row, but its ContentDM page-image viewer is JavaScript-rendered and returned no extractable text to automated fetch in this pass. Needed for a future heavyweight pass alongside the CHL manuscript.
Proofread against the source text.
Light review: in-context proofread against the cited Millennial Star OCR lines; confirmed no double-spacing, synopsis bleed, or session-music-bleed artifacts remain, and that the two already-flagged uncertainties (the 'Gaboon'/'Cahoon' spelling variance and the two bracketed OCR-repair insertions in G. A. Smith's Saturday sermon) are honestly noted rather than silently resolved. NOT a full page-by-page scan collation.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: located and opened the CHL manuscript witness (Historian's Office general Church minutes, 1839-1877, 'Salt Lake City, 1850 September 6-8,' CR 100 318, 25 leaves, recorded by Thomas Bullock) via the Church History Catalog viewer. Spot-collated multiple passages against the manuscript image (the San Pete/gold-mines passage, the Perpetual Emigrating Fund passage, Elder Hyde's education lecture, and the 'Mr. A' tithing illustration) and confirmed the Millennial Star-sourced text in this file matches the manuscript wording closely, with no wording changes made as a result. Resolved the flagged 'Gaboon'/'Cahoon' discrepancy: the manuscript's attendee list gives only initials ('J.Y. & R.C.'), which is consistent with 'Cahoon' and not with 'Gaboon' (which would read 'R.G.'); the body text below has been corrected to 'R. Cahoon' accordingly, with this fix noted rather than silently made. Confirmed the manuscript continues well past the point where the Millennial Star's reprint cuts off (at least through leaf 9 of 25), meaning the 'lost or mislaid' Sunday content the Star's editor described does survive here -- but this continuation's handwriting was not legible enough via remote visual inspection in this pass to transcribe with the confidence this vault requires; no text was added from it, to avoid guessing at cursive readings. This is the single highest-value follow-up for a future pass with better image access (native IIIF tiles/high-resolution export rather than screenshots of a rendered viewer).
