Conference record · 1848 April General Conference · 1848-04-06
Full transcription pass (2026-07-24, claude-fable-5): all 22 leaves of the CHL manuscript (Historian's Office general Church minutes, 1839-1877, '1848 April 6-9' / 'General Conference minutes, Iowa,' CR 100 318, recorded by Thomas Bullock) are now transcribed below by direct reading of the CHL leaf images, fetched via the catalog's own delivery API (accessLevelCode: unconditional confirmed per leaf before download). Method: each leaf was read as four overlapping 2x-scale contrast-enhanced bands, with additional 3-4x zoom crops for hard words. The record covers all four days (April 6-9, 1848): organization, the sustaining of the reorganized First Presidency and church officers, discourses by Hyde, the Youngs, Kimball, Pratt, Woodruff, G. A. Smith, Morley, Emer Harris, and others, the team-raising business, the naming of Kanesville, and adjournment to October 6. Still graded fragmentary, not because content is missing, but because Bullock's fast longhand carries real word-level uncertainty; every uncertain reading is bracketed in place ([word?], [illegible]) rather than smoothed over, cancellations are recorded as [struck: ...], and interlineations as ^[...]. A second reader collating against the same images would tighten specific bracketed spots.
All 22 leaves transcribed below (2026-07-24) by direct reading of the leaf images (files CR 100 318_2_5_3.jpg through _2_5_24.jpg, numbered here leaves 1-22 in catalog-viewer order). Catalog description: 'General Conference. April 6, speakers were Orson Hyde, Brigham Young, George A. Smith, and Joseph Young; also council meeting. April 7, speakers were Orson Hyde, Phineas H. The transcription below confirms the description's speaker lists in substance.
Same document already transcribed in full at talks/english/early-restoration/1849/1849-04-conference-record-great-salt-lake-city-conference.md. Only the one paragraph recalling this April 1848 conference is repeated here. Demoted from preferred now that the CHL manuscript's own text is transcribed; its account of the sustaining is corroborated by the manuscript (leaves 1-2).
Corroborates the date and the sustaining action without adding independent detail about this specific conference.
Proofread against the source text.
Light review (original pass): in-context proofread; no artifacts found in the short file that existed at that time.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Legacy field (heavyweight review retired 2026-07). The 2026-07 heavyweight pass located the CHL manuscript and transcribed its catalog description only; the manuscript body text now present in this file was transcribed in the 2026-07-24 follow-up pass described in fidelity_notes.
