Conference record · 1844 October General Conference · 1844-10-06
Preferred witness is the Church History Catalog scan of Times and Seasons, 15 October 1844, pp. 682-685, corrected against the page images from D:\Conference_10_1844.pdf. The October conference minutes continue in Times and Seasons, 1 November 1844, pp. 691-697, with the Church History Catalog continuation recorded as a witness; the continuation text still needs direct scan collation before review. This is a published minutes record and summarized discourse report, not a stenographic verbatim transcript of every address.
First installment of the October Conference Minutes, visually checked against the Times and Seasons scan pages 682-685.
Continuation of the October Conference Minutes, pages 691-697; recorded as the source witness for the continuation, pending direct scan collation.
Helper transcript identifying the Times and Seasons installments for 15 October 1844, pp. 682-685, and 1 November 1844, pp. 691-697.
Proofread against the source text.
Light review: in-context proofread of both installments (Times and Seasons 15 Oct. 1844 pp. 682-685 and 1 Nov. 1844 pp. 691-697) covering the succession-era conference: sustaining the Twelve, Asahel Smith's ordination as Patriarch, and the quorum reorganization. No double-spacing or garbled-OCR artifacts found; content is coherent and matches the well-documented historical record of this conference. NOT a full page-by-page scan collation -- the file's own notes already flag that the continuation still needs a direct scan-collation pass before a heavyweight/publication upgrade, which this light review does not attempt or claim.
Collated word-by-word against the original scan.
Heavyweight pass: the file's preferred witness (Church History Catalog leaf-image viewer) returned no extractable OCR/text in this environment, so collated against an independent OCR digitization of the same underlying publication instead -- Internet Archive's per_utah-and-the-mormons_times-and-seasons_1844-10-15_5_19 (15 Oct. issue) and _1844-11-01_5_20 (1 Nov. issue). Both installments' openings matched the vault text verbatim ('Thousands having arrived on the ground by ten o'clock A.M. Elder P.P. Pratt called the people to order...'; the sustaining-vote sequence for Heber C. Kimball and Orson Hyde as apostles). One divergence found and left unresolved rather than silently overwritten: the vault reads 'Elder W. W. Phelps moved that we uphold Brigham Young...', while the IA OCR is itself corrupted at the same spot (missing the verb entirely -- 'Elder W. Phelps that we Brigham Young the president...'), so this IA witness can't confirm or contradict 'uphold' either way; resolving it needs the preferred CHL scan, which this environment couldn't read as text. Everything else checked matched. Source URL, source_type, and witness metadata confirmed correct. Remains 'reconstructed' fidelity per the file's own honest grading, and the file's own notes already flag the continuation as still needing a direct CHL scan-collation pass -- this pass substitutes an independent witness for that gap rather than closing it outright.
This is a living critical edition. If you find a transcription, metadata, or sourcing error in this talk, report it to the editors →Reports are collated against the page scan and land as corrections in the vault.
